Slylock Fox begins its descent into horror gradually, by playing on common phobias. Hey, kids, are you afraid of spiders? With their enormous, stalky legs and inhuman eyes? Yeah, well, mice are even more afraid than you. Little and fuzzy and harmless to stop the beast, as it cocoons them in its filthy web. To make matters worse, your pleas are ignored as passers-by stare in awe: “which two mouseys have the same amount of whiskers?”
In all seriousness, Weber’s fondness for drawing little cute things in danger is really creepy. This is the sort of thing that made child me cry.
